Distinctive Unit Insignia

Description
A gold color metal and enamel device 1 3/16 inches (3.02 cm) in height overall consisting of a gold demi-sun with beveled rays, surmounted by four maroon stylized mountain peaks, bearing at center a white Maltese cross, and at base crossed gold keys with wards outward all above a gold scroll inscribed PLEDGED TO SERVE in black letters.

Symbolism
The gold sun and rays symbolize the organizations location in the Golden State of California.  The stylized mountain peaks allude to the word Sierra meaning mountains having a saw-toothed appearance.  The white Maltese cross is the emblem of the Knights Hospitallers of St. John, one of its missions being medical aid.  The crossed keys represent the mission of the Sierra Army Depot to receive and store supplies.  Maroon and white are colors used for the Army Medical Department.

Background
The distinctive unit insignia was approved on 3 May 1974.  It was rescinded on 28 September 1976.
